History of Oysterman Boats
Paul Gartside
The story of the Oysterman boats is that we began with the 16 in 1977 or thereabouts in the family boatyard in Malpas, Cornwall, where I grew up. We built 7 or 8, if I remember rightly. Then in 1983 I emigrated to Canada and the boatyard was sold. The molds and rights to build the 16 were transferred to Riverside Products in Penryn. I forget the owner’s name, He thought a larger version was needed and I designed the 22 for him, but was never involved in the construction – I was in Canada then.

The Oysterman 22 gaff cutter was designed by Paul Gartside and built by Oystersailers in Penryn, Falmouth. It is based on the lines of the Falmouth working boats and is known for its robust construction and cruising capabilities. Several Oysterman 22s were built, with the original "Ester" (Number 1) being a notable example.
